WOOF: Media Monday - Jobseeking WOOFers!

Jobseeking WOOFers: Your Time is NOW!

WOOF is proud to have Mary Eileen Williams, guest blog contributor:

In addition to being a proud member of the Feisty Side of Fifty, I’ve been a career counselor/job search specialist for more then 20 years. Because so many boomers have been laid off after years of employment and don’t have the skills to successfully navigate today’s job market, I’ve created a book/workbook so that readers could compete with confidence.

Land the Job You Love: 10 Surefire Strategies for JobseekersOver 50 walks jobseekers through each phase of the process, provides detailed actions steps, and guides older applicants in techniques that will distinguish them as the valuable candidate they are. Thanks to top dogs, Mary Cunningham and Diana Black, I’ve been given this opportunity to spread the word about this very special time of year…
Many jobseekers don’t realize that opportunities for finding work do not rest on national economic figures alone—there is a seasonal aspect to the job hunt. Early fall is one of the two strongest hiring periods of the year. Just like the school year begins afresh, organizations gear up after the summer slowdown. Companies need employees and contract workers to carry out new projects and initiatives. Therefore, they begin to interview more actively.

So now is the time to be certain you’re doing all you can to be one of those selected:

Approach the market with confidence. Realize much of the doom and gloom about older applicants is not borne out by real statistics. US News and World Report stated in a recent article that from 1/1/10 to 4/1/11 (a period of 15 months), most new jobs went to applicants 55 and older. And this number was huge! You’ll want to be certain to check out the great news here

Get your resume in tip-top shape. Read up on the critical keys to marketing your skills and experience in a way that will highlight your strengths, distinguish you from the competition, and arouse the reader’s interest. Also be sure to take a look at the brief 5-minute video that explains how best to format your resume.

Network like crazy. Use online tools such as Linked-In, Twitter, and Facebook to best advantage. But, whenever you can, nothing beats a face-to-face meeting. Create a list of target companies where you’d like to work and network your way through the door.

Ace the interview. Prepare well and study the current trends in your industry. Read up on the company—pay particular attention to recent developments: management changes, new products and marketing initiatives, and any news about the competition. You’ll need to sound like a knowledgeable insider.

Be able to name your key skills and be certain to back them up with examples of you performing your work at its best. Examples prove (as much as possible within an interview setting) that you own these skills and have used them successfully in the past. Prior accomplishments are considered the best predictor of future success—so you'll want to wow your interviewer with what you've already achieved. Check out how to do this and nail 5 key questions here.

Understand the rules of the game today. If you’re an older applicant, chances are you’re wasting a lot of time and effort going about your job search using less than effective means. By understanding a few techniques and strategies to present yourself well in the modern job market, you’ll shave weeks—maybe months—off of your search. The dog days of summer are over, but your opportunities for finding work are just now gearing up—so go out there and show ‘em just how doggone feisty a jobseeker over 50 can be. And, as a savvy WOOFer, you’ll be leading the pack for sure!

Land The Job You Love - Mary Eileen Williams

We're so happy to welcome one of our all-time favorite WOOFers, Mary Eileen Williams. Welcome to the WOOFers Club Blog, Eileen!

Aside from writing your blog and hosting your radio show, Feisty Side of Fifty, you’ve just written a book for jobseekers over 50. What led you to do this?

I feel so many people have been discouraged by the news—especially older jobseekers. I’ve been a job search specialist for twenty years and wanted to help. So I decided to write a book and disclose several insider tips and techniques that make a huge difference in getting a job.

Hopefully, Land the Job You Love: 10 Surefire Strategies for Jobseekers Over 50 will save people time, money, and lots of frustration.

What’s the #1 factor holding older applicants back?

We buy into the idea that, because we’re older, we’re no longer valuable or desirable in the workforce. Nothing could be further from the truth! We’ve got great experience, highly developed skills, a mature work ethic, and a substantial network of coworkers, clients, and customers. Besides that, a huge percentage of the workforce is over fifty and our ranks are rapidly growing. There’s absolutely no reason we should feel at a disadvantage because of our age.

What are some tips that will help older applicants?

• Market your skills—substantiate them with examples of you performing your work at its best.

• Use your network to your advantage. There are relatively easy ways to network your way into your targeted companies and get yourself in front of key decision makers.

• Present yourself well on paper: often a resume will be the first impression of you. There is a particular style that works best for older applicants in the book. Highlight your accomplishments in such a way they are readily apparent within a 30-second scan—that’s about how long most reviewers spend deciding whether or not they’ll read your resume.

• Know the interview process. Practice frequently asked questions and how to best respond to behavioral style questions. Create your own list of questions to ascertain the needs of the interviewer and the company. Prepare, prepare, prepare—this is showtime!

• Anticipate success: learn the best ways to market yourself and you’ll land a job you will love!

Feisty Side of Fifty Interview!

Showing Attitude! (Eileen is in the middle)

Diana (d.d. dawg) and Mary (Milkbone) had the privilege of being interviewed on Blog Talk Radio by Eileen Williams of Feisty Side of Fifty Fame.

Except for a couple of "wardrobe malfunctions" (While answering one of Eileen's questions, a bird mistook Mary's office window for open air space, and a few minutes later, Diana's other phone line rang off the hook while she was talking), the interview was fun and, well...Feisty!

Kudos to WOOFer Eileen for the way she has built her dream into a major site for Boomer women. In addition to Mary & Diana, she has also interviewed Suzanne Braun Levine, the first editor of Ms. Magazine, and (don't tell anyone) we have it from a reliable source that best-selling author (and WOOFer) Mary Higgins Clark will soon be a guest!

We just hope Ms. Clark can hold up to the pressure of following Diana and Mary's fabulous interview!

Fetching WOOFer Feet!

I have a thing for feet.

Back of the ankles and toes especially.

At this age, trying my hand at yoga again, I’m reminded that feet are so neglected. (Ya think? High heels!) Except for the occasional pedicure, we rarely play with our toes, just letting them wiggle and our feet flex.

Good news? Once we start pampering them a little, they start to forgive us. AND guess what? They love being up in the air. Higher than our heads. (Think babies grabbing their toes and sticking them in their mouths!)

I posted much of this on my personal blog and got this wonderful comment from Eileen Williams, of Feisty Side of Fifty fame:

Leave it to a Master Woofer to remind me that my dogs are barkin'! I haven't let my poor overworked feet hang out above my head for years. Now that you've reminded me, they're just itching to wriggle freely, straight up and proudly held high.

Okay, so tell me. Why are you still sitting there with your feet under your desk? Get off that chair, onto the floor, feet in the air…now wiggle those WOOFer toes!

Hmm, and notice whether you're losing fat on the balls of your feet. Hey, that's what Mad Dog claims in our book!
