My Worst Fear - Walking!

Me, walking (in my dreams!)

Now that the weather is breaking, I’m forced to face my worst fear: Walking! I know people who adore walking (Diana, aka, d.d. dawg, among them), but I’d almost rather wash windows! (almost) What’s wrong with me?

Anyone out there have any alternatives? Not exercising is Not an option. My thighs are creating so much friction , I’m afraid of starting a fire!

What’s your favorite “Over Fifty” exercise? Even if it’s walking, let us know how you make it fun!

Thoughts on walking (courtesy of friend and WOOFer, Donna:

I like long walks,
especially when they are taken
by people who annoy me.

************************************

The only reason I would take up walking
is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

*************************************

I have to walk early in the morning,
before my brain figures out what I'm doing.

*************************************

Every time I hear the dirty word exercise,
I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

***************************************

We all get heavier as we get older,
because there's a lot more information in our heads.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

****************************************

You could run this over to your friends,
But just e-mail it to them!

(Taken from one of those annoyingly funny e-mails. Author unknown)

My advice - Get a dog! You'll enjoy walking when you see how much your dog likes it. If you already have one and you still don't like to walk, you're sunk.

When you walk outside, walk with a friend. The more you talk, the easier the walk! If you have access to a treadmill, you can read while you walk. This is my favorite. The miles just fly by.

Great advice, Morgan and Fairy Lady.

(neither one of you bought the picture huh?)

Forgot to mention that I live on such a huge hill, I have to DRIVE the car to get to a decent walking path!

Did you hear the one about the woman who didn't like to walk because it made ... her nose run! That's pretty "lame," if ya ask me :>)

What is it, 5000 steps we're supposed to take in a day? That's a lot for these ole WOOFer paws.

But the benefits greatly...

Hello?! Your eyes are glazing over...

I read as I returned from the dreaded gym. I hate it as often as I can drag my lazy self there. (when the weather is nice, I sometimes do the equally dreaded walking thing). THIS is how I make it not only tolerable, but actually somewhat enjoyable:
I bought myself an MP3 player, onto which I download bestselling audiobooks that I get from the library (I like free). I totally lose myself in a wonderful novel, forgetting that I'm doing something I so hate. I sometimes exercise longer than I anticipated, simply because I'm not ready to "put the book down." (I continue listening on my way home, as I do housework, cook, and other tasks as dreaded as excercise).
Hugs, Rachelle

Getting some great suggestions!! Love yours Rachelle. I can see how you could lose yourself in a great book and forgot how far you'd walked.

Do you ever get lost?? LOL

I hate walking too, so my advice is: get a Nintendo Wii. You can get a good workout in the privacy of your home, plus have fun at the same time with Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

Oh, Linda! I'd love to hear how you like your Wii Fit! Thinking about getting it but I'm hearing mixed reviews!

Thanks for bringing it up.

First of all, I love my dog, but I hate walking with him. I'm an arrival gal, a git 'er done woman, so all of the breaks we take while he lifts his leg keep me from my goal, which is to be NOT walking. My ultimate motivational exercise would be if I could get someone to keep about five paces ahead of me while dangling a Snickers bar - I might even run for that one.

Seriously, the only motivation for exercise is that I'd like to be mobile in my 80's and beyond. And at my funeral, I'd like the pastor's first words to be, "Wow! She was really, really old!"

HAHAHAHAHA!! Gayle, I love it. I could get in the spirit chasing after a Snickers!

I hear you about walking the dog. We had a Bassett hound named "Wilbur" who loved to sniff EVERY SINGLE LEAF for at least 5 minutes before leaving his "calling card."

Try getting back into yoga, attempting a pose -say the cobra - after many years away from the practice, and maybe walking won't seem so bad!

I'll tell ya one thing. It's a lot less humiliating. Unless you step off a path like I once did, thinking no one saw me, only to discover when I got back to the retreat facility, I was the subject of conversation. "Did you see how Diana just fell right off the edge of the road onto her knees? It was like slow-motion!"

Okay, so maybe walking IS overrated!

Mary, I'm about as non-athletic as it gets. I hate to exercise, heck, I hate to sweat ... especially in public. So the Wii is perfect for me. I can exercise as long as it's fun and I'm not bored. I had no idea how flabby my muscles were until I started toning them up. If you have any specific questions, contact me by the form on the Who? page on my blog.

Thanks, so much, for letting me know! Even as I lose a pound or two, I will have a problem with flab! Good to know that Wii Fit helps to tone muscles.

Now, to figure out how to justify the purchase in this economy! (It's always something, isn't it?)

Appreciate the update, Linda!
