WOOF: Furry Friends Friday - Will Love For Food

 I Rescued A Human Today

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage.
I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today.

Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.

Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

Furry Friends Friday - Lucky Lucy-Lucky Us!

It’s been two and a half years since we lost our 16-year-old terrier mix, Molly, and more than two years before we even considered adopting another dog. We’d casually talk about it but, just over a week ago, I announced to my husband that I was “putting the word out” to various pet rescue sites.

A few days later we saw the picture of a little black and white puff ball named Gigi. For whatever reason, her owner abandoned her at a Pets Mart. I choose to believe this person simply couldn’t take care of her and thought, what better place to leave a dog? Surely some kind soul would take care of her.

Lucky for Gigi and lucky for us, 1 Lucky Dog Rescue picked her up, got her shots up-to-date and groomed her for what might be a long adoption process. Not so. The moment we spotted the picture that a friend posted on my Facebook page, we knew she was the “daughter” we’d waited for.

Oh, but getting her wouldn’t be that easy. First, she was in South Florida! Logistics were against us, but fate intervened. A rescue transport volunteer just happened to be driving to the Atlanta area the next day! Within 48 hours of seeing her picture, we had a new member of the family.

We decided that, although the name Gigi is cute, it just didn’t fit, so she is now, Lucy. Like the Beatles song, she’s our diamond.

WOOF promotes adoptions and rescues. Please do your part and help dogs like Lucy find good homes. You won’t regret it. If you don’t believe me, just look at these pictures. Who could resist?

And, please, if you're thinking of getting a furry friend for your family - ADOPT!

WOOF Furry Friends Friday: Who's Your Fur-Ever Friend?

For anyone who doesn't know the story of Cuddles, she was a sick pup with a life-threatening skin condition just a few months back.

Through many months of care and nurturing by 2 amazing families, she's a happy, healthy dachshund who's also made some good friends along the way.

Here she is "cuddling" with her brother, Diesel. (Cuddles is the one with the cool pink bandana)

Do you have a Fur-Ever Friend? Or a Fur-Less-Forever Friend (Huh??). Share with the WOOFers!

And, please, if you're thinking of getting a furry friend for your family - ADOPT!

WOOF: Furry Friends Friday - Happy Tails

Just discovered a blog called Happy Tails and wanted to share this story about Berringer, abandoned by his family and rescued by the kind, generous Weiss family. Be sure to click on the link below to hear the rest of the story.

Thanksgiving gives us many things to be thankful for: friends, family, hot mulled cider… But the holidays don’t bring cheer for everyone. Many rescues put their adoption applicants on hold during the holidays because of the many mislead people who wish to give pets for holiday gifts (the majority of the time this gift pets end up back at the rescue or in shelters). This causes foster homes to be in especially short supply, which is compounded by the fact that many fosters are unavailable because they are on vacation. Luckily for Berringer, a rescued Lab in need of a foster home, The Weiss family was willing to open their heart and home of a needy dog for the holidays:

WOOF: Furry Friends Friday - Cuddles Beats The Odds

Cuddles had just passed her first birthday when she was rescued after being brought into the Key Largo Humane Society with life-threatening mange. The sweet little dachshund is making a miraculous recovery mostly because of her rescue angel, Sandra Sanchez of Pembroke Pines, FL.

Cuddles - week 1

She's had a long, painful couple of months. As you can see from the picture above, she was a very sick little girl.

But, with loving care and a fighting spirit, she's beaten the odds. And, to emphasize her recovery,

Cuddles was the August Calendar Girl on the Dachshund Rescue South Florida Blog! Here she is doing her best Audrey Hepburn impersonation.
